What is a walk-in shower?

A walk-in shower has a low tray or a completely level floor, so there is no bath side to climb over and no high step. For someone who is unsteady, has had a hip or knee replaced, or uses a frame, that step is the dangerous part of washing. Take it away and most people can shower on their own again.

A typical job in a Cork home means taking out the bath, fitting a non-slip tray in the same space, adding a fold-down seat and grab rails, and finishing the walls so the room looks like it was always that way. Where a wheelchair or shower chair is used, a wet room with no tray at all is usually the better choice.

Who pays for it?

Many households pay privately. If the household income is under €37,500, the Mobility Aids Grant can cover up to €8,000 of the cost. For larger adaptations there is the Housing Adaptation Grant of up to €40,000. Both are run by the council, and both must be approved before work starts. Our grants guide shows which one fits.

Your questions answered

How much does a walk-in shower cost in Cork?

A bath to shower conversion typically costs €4,500 to €8,000, and a full wet room typically €7,000 to €12,000. The price depends on the size of the room, the wall finish and whether the floor has to be lowered. We give a written quote after seeing the room.

Is there a grant for a walk-in shower?

Yes. The Mobility Aids Grant pays up to €8,000 for accessible showers where the household income is under €37,500. The Housing Adaptation Grant pays up to €40,000 for larger work, with household income up to €75,000. You apply to your council and must wait for approval before work starts.

What happens after I request a callback?

We ring you, ask who the shower is for and what they find difficult, and arrange a time to see the bathroom. After the visit you get a written quote. There is no charge for the call and no obligation.

Do we need an occupational therapist report?

For the Mobility Aids Grant, an occupational therapist report is required for a stairlift or hoist. For a shower the council may still ask for one, and for the Housing Adaptation Grant it is normally part of the application. If you already have a report, we work from it.
